Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to San Diego

Moving to a new city is always an adventure, but San Diego has a way of surprising even the most prepared newcomers. Here are some things I wish I’d known before making San Diego my new home.

The Weather Isn’t Always What You Expect

Yes, San Diego is famous for its beautiful weather, but it’s not all endless summer. June Gloom is real—expect gray, overcast mornings that can last well into the afternoon. And while it rarely gets cold, you’ll want a light jacket for those breezy evenings by the coast.

Neighborhoods Have Distinct Personalities

From the laid-back surf vibe of Ocean Beach to the upscale feel of La Jolla, every neighborhood in San Diego has its own character. Spend time exploring before you settle down. You might fall in love with the historic charm of South Park or the bustling energy of North Park.

It’s a Car City (But There’s More to It)

Public transportation exists, but most San Diegans rely on their cars. Parking can be a challenge, especially near the beaches or downtown. That said, biking is popular in many areas, and the trolley system is expanding—so don’t rule out alternative ways to get around.

The Cost of Living Can Be a Shock

San Diego’s beauty comes at a price. Rent, groceries, and even a simple night out can add up quickly. Budget accordingly and be prepared for some sticker shock, especially if you’re moving from a less expensive city.

The Food Scene Is Incredible (and Diverse!)

Tacos are practically a food group here, but that’s just the beginning. From fresh seafood to authentic Asian cuisine, San Diego’s culinary scene is a delicious journey. Don’t miss the farmers markets for local produce and the craft breweries for a true taste of the city.

Nature Is Everywhere

Whether you’re a beach bum, a hiker, or just someone who loves a good sunset, San Diego delivers. Torrey Pines, Balboa Park, and countless hidden trails make it easy to escape into nature without leaving the city limits.

People Are (Mostly) Laid Back

There’s a reason they call it “America’s Finest City.” The locals are friendly, and the pace of life is a little slower. Embrace the chill vibe, and you’ll fit right in.

Moving to San Diego was one of the best decisions I ever made, but knowing these things ahead of time would have made the transition even smoother. If you’re planning your own move, I hope these insights help you feel right at home—faster than I did!
